Asian American Awareness Month keynote speaker Eddie Huang, whose memoir inspired the new ABC sitcom “Fresh Off the Boat.”

“15 Years Celebrating Consciousness and Culture.” The University of Illinois at Chicago celebrates Asian American Awareness Month with cultural events, performances, and other presentations.  The keynote speaker is Eddie Huang, author of the memoir-turned-ABC show “Fresh Off the Boat.”

Asian American Awareness Month Kickoff with UIC Radio. 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. Lecture Center Quad, outside directly west of Student Center East, 750 S. Halsted St. (In case of rain, event will be held in Student Center East, Room 302.)

April 7
Asian American and Native American Pacific Islander Serving Institution (AANAPISI) Survey Event: Serving Our Community. Showcase of student and faculty work focused on community needs. Eligible UIC undergraduate students will be asked to complete demographic information for the AANAPISI survey under a grant funded by the Department of Education. 11 a.m. – 2 p.m. Lecture Center Quad, outside directly west of Student Center East, 750 S. My Sassy Korea. Korean festival featuring food and variety acts. 6:30 – 10 p.m. Student Center East, Illinois Room, 750 S. Halsted St.

UIC Asian American Resource and Cultural Center 10th Anniversary Celebration and Director’s Welcome. Retrospective on center’s 10 years at UIC with personal tributes, video/slideshow and refreshments. Welcoming of new director Mark Martell. “Mr. & Mrs. Asian Sensation.” Annual male and female pageant and talent competition. 6 – 8 p.m. Student Center East, Illinois Room, 750 S. Halsted St.

“Reclaiming Life: Silencing Stigma.” Student production features true stories dramatizing mental health issues of Asian American and Middle Eastern storytellers. 4 – 6 p.m. James J. Stukel Tower Event Center, 718 W. Rochford St.

Eddie Huang, keynote for Asian American Awareness Month. Huang, a chef, restaurateur and author whose memoir inspired the new ABC sitcom “Fresh Off the Boat,” will discuss having his life turned into a television show and the challenges of preserving his Taiwanese roots in America. 4 – 6 p.m. Student Center East, Illinois Room, 750 S.
