The Flames basketball teams take on their first competitors Saturday with back-to-back exhibition matches.

The women’s squad faces Elmhurst College at 1 p.m. at the UIC Pavilion, then the men’s team takes on University of Chicago at 3:30 p.m.

“We have many returners from last season and the upperclassmen have done a fantastic job helping the newcomers integrate into our system,” women’s head coach Regina Miller said. “Great beginnings lead to great endings.”

“We’ve got a group of guys that are hungry,” head coach Howard Moore said. “This group comes to work every day.

“We’re going to play an exciting brand of basketball.”

The women’s team begins its season Nov. 8 with a match against St. Xavier at the Pavilion. The men’s squad opens its season against Drake Nov. 9 at the Pavilion.

Members of both squads received preseason honors from the Horizon League.

Seniors Katie Hannemann and Rachel Story were voted Preseason First Team All-Horizon League. They were also selected to the College Sports Madness Preseason First Team All-Horizon League.

For the men’s team, senior Kelsey Barlow was named to the Preseason All-Horizon League Second Team.
