Longer hours in SSB

All offices in the Student Services Building have extended hours for the first week of fall semester: Wednesday and Thursday, 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.; Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Parking and ID offices will be open until 6 p.m. through Thursday.

What’s the WoRD?

The next selection for the campus book group WoRD (Women’s Reading and Discussion) is Quiet: The Power of Introverts by Susan Cain. Plenty of time to read it — the next meeting is Nov. 10 at noon in 1-470 Daley Library.

WoRD was founded by members of the UIC Chancellor’s Committee on the Status of Women. All UIC employees and students are invited to join; for more information, email kzimme3@uic.edu

Stroll through the garden

Tour the city’s only medicinal plant garden Friday when the College of Pharmacy hosts the 2014 Garden Walk and Lesniewicz Memorial Lecture.

The event will feature tours of the Dorothy Bradley Atkins Medicinal Plant Garden from 10 a.m. to noon and 1:30 to 3 p.m.

The lecture by Memory Elvin-Lewis, biology professor at Washington University, on “Understanding Traditional Healing Plants of Tropical Rainforests in Northern South America,” begins at noon in 32 Pharmacy.

The garden has more than 200 species of medicinal plants, including black cohosh, purple coneflower and foxglove, used to treat ailments around the world.

Party for world health

“Working for the World,” a benefit to support the UIC Center for Global Health, is set for 6 to 9 p.m. Sept. 18.

The event, at the National Museum of Mexican Art, 1852 W. 19th St., includes a cocktail reception, silent auction, global trivia contest and door prizes. Tickets are $125. Donations will benefit the center’s Global Medical Educational program and support students working on service projects in Guatemala, Haiti, Uganda, Vietnam and Senegal.

UI Health night with the Fire

UI Health’s third annual employee night Sept. 13 features a picnic and discount tickets to the Chicago Fire Soccer Club vs. Toronto FC game at Toyota Park.

Employees and their families get discounted tickets for $15, normally $28. The price includes the picnic with food, drink, giveaways and games.

The Chicago Fire offers bus service to games from several city locations.

Dance and learn

Combine career networking and salsa dancing Sept. 12 when Applied Health Sciences alumni, students, faculty and staff head to Chicago SummerDance.

The get-together at the city’s free summertime public dance series will be held from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. at the Grant Park Spirit of Music Garden, 601 S. Michigan Ave. David Marquez, associate professor of kinesiology, will discuss the health benefits of dance. The city provides basic Latin dance instruction and live music. RSVP by Sept. 4 to Erica Chavez at eachavez@uic.edu

Alumni awards

The deadline is Aug. 31 to nominate outstanding UIC grads for the 2015 Alumni Awards.

In October, the Alumni Association honors outstanding UIC graduates with the Alumni Achievement, Distinguished Service and Humanitarian awards. Other awards are presented throughout the year.

Urban neighborhoods

The 2014 Urban Forum will spotlight “The Return of the Neighborhood as an Urban Strategy.”

The event, Sept. 18 at the UIC Forum, brings academics, planners and community leaders together to discuss the complexities of metropolitan regions.

This year’s co-chairs are Chancellor Paula Allen-Meares, Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle and Susana Vasquez, executive director of LISC/Chicago.
