Jazz workshops for kids

UIC hosts free weekend jazz workshops for youths in March.

On Saturdays in March, the music department offers free jazz workshops for students in grades 7-12, led by a UIC professor or other Chicago jazz pro.

Each session includes presentations, lectures, jam sessions, guest speakers, lunch “and loads of playing,” said Helen Vasey, music programs manager.

This year’s theme is “jazz from the Americas.”

The March 16 workshop, led by pianist Leandro Lopez-Varady, features the music of Argentina. Trumpeter Orbert Davis, clinical associate professor of jazz, will lead the March 23 workshop on Cuban music.

Space is still available. Register online.
