Life in the library

The fourth floor of the Daley Library is often the most crowded — it’s a great place to work on homework and socialize, students say. Photo: Alex Rauch

I like to study on the fourth floor of the Daley Library. It might be a little more crowded and noisy but I don’t mind.

The library is my home away from home. I am there Monday through Friday and sometimes on the weekend. I complete a lot of my coursework in the library. I prefer the fourth floor of the library, although I have heard people say that the fourth floor is noisy compared to the other floors. However, I feel like the other floors are too quiet. The noise doesn’t bother me because I put my headphones on and listen to music, which can get noisy, too. I enjoy the atmosphere; some people work alone and others work in groups but everyone is working.

Everyone is mindful of the next person. Sometimes I see that a person has left the computer for a while and another person comes along trying to find a computer and recognizes that someone is still using that computer so they find another one. Simple things like that show respect and I appreciate that.

Another positive thing about the library is Idea Commons. It houses an information help desk located on the first floor. I have received help with research and finding credible sources for research papers and presentations. They helped me learn how to navigate the online library research databases. They have helped me find books and scholarly journals, although locating books in the library is a task in itself. The information I find helps me in my research which has had a positive impact on my grades and raised my level of understanding.

So get to know the Library because eventually you will need the resources it offers.

Matthew Maggit is a sophomore in accounting in the College of Business Administration. Matthew decided to come to UIC because of the business program’s reputation and because he wanted to study at a campus with a diverse atmosphere. He likes how close the campus is to downtown Chicago and the Willis Tower. In his free time, he loves to surround myself with loved ones, and he enjoys sports and going to the gym.
