Open house highlights UIC programs

open house_newUIC will roll out the red carpet Oct. 5 when it welcomes thousands of prospective students, families, friends, alumni and community members to the UIC Open House.

The event, which takes place from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., will feature a variety of informational activities involving UIC’s colleges, departments and organizations.

“The day offers an extensive look at the diverse programs and academic opportunities available here, but it is structured so attendees can tailor it to their interests,” said Kevin Browne, vice provost for academic and enrollment services.

“For many attendees, the open house will be their first experience at UIC.”

Guest check-in will be located at the UIC Forum, where over 70 support services and academic areas of interest will be represented and available to answer questions.

The program includes admissions and financial aid sessions, guided tours of the campus and six residence halls, and academic presentations featuring UIC faculty.

Potential and current students can explore opportunities for involvement at a student life fair staffed by student organizations and campus recreation.

Live music and performances by the pep band and spirit teams will be presented in the lecture center plaza.

“We hope our guests will gain greater insight into the quality of our academic programs, research, support services and cultural activities,” Browne said.

“It’s a marvelous opportunity to showcase the campus and communicate our mission.”

More than two dozen campus units have signed up to participate, but Browne encourages more to join the open house program.

UIC units can contribute to the event in multiple ways — host an information table at the UIC Expo, plan a relevant academic lecture or information session, give a tour of academic space, or present a demonstration at different points throughout the day.

“We want to deliver the most comprehensive look at everything UIC offers,” he said.

“Our colleges, departments and organizations play an important role in the university’s continued growth and the open house is a great way to engage in those efforts.”

To present an open house program or reserve a table at the expo,  rmoran1@uic.edu before the Sept. 12 deadline.
