Softball upset in Horizon League tournament

UIC’s Natalie Hernandez. The softball team ended its season Thursday in the Horizon League tournament.

The top-seeded softball team saw its season come to a close Thursday as No. 3 Valparaiso defeated the Flames, 3-0, at Flames Field.

Earlier Thursday, the Flames fell to Wright State, 1-0.

Junior Jenna Marsalli scored a homer in the bottom of the seventh inning to try to salvage the Flames’ season. The Flames and Crusaders notched only three hits each.

Senior Coryn Schmit and junior Jacki Fletcher each had a hit against Valparaiso. Valparaiso collected two runs in the fourth frame and another in the sixth.

Despite the solo shot by Marsalli, the Flames couldn’t rally to stay in the Horizon League tournament.

UIC finished its season 23-25 overall and 16-5 in Horizon League play.
