A 28-year-old Chicago man faces multiple charges in the sexual assault of a female student Monday morning in a campus residence hall.

Other residents in Commons South heard the attack, called UIC Police and detained the suspect until police arrived.

Tavares Humphries, of the 3300 block of West Lexington Street, was charged with attempted murder, aggravated criminal sexual assault, aggravated kidnapping, battery of a police officer and residential burglary.

The student was attacked in the shower about 10 a.m. Police are reviewing video surveillance tapes to determine how the man entered the building, which has a secure, guarded entrance and outer doors that lock when closed.

The student is receiving medical and supportive care. Any campus residents or other students in need of counseling or other support should contact Campus Housing, 312-355-6300, the UIC Counseling Center, 312-996-3490, or the Campus Advocacy Network, 312-413-1025.

UIC Police have increased patrols in residence halls and urge students to always keep security doors closed and locked, and never allow strangers to follow them through a security door.

Anyone with information should contact UIC Police at 312-996-2830.
