Volleyball team takes second at invitational

The volleyball team split its matches against Chicago State and Denver Saturday on the final day of the UIC Invitational.

UIC beat Chicago State, 3-1, and lost to Denver, 3-0.

The Flames (3-4) placed second overall in the tournament as Denver (5-1) took home the team title. Marshall (2-6) placed third and Chicago State (0-7) finished fourth.

Senior setter MaryKate Imrie was named to the All-Tournament Team.

Imrie, who is averaging 11.36 assists per set this season, finished the weekend with 143 assists, 21 digs, five kills, four blocks and three service aces.

Imrie ranks sixth in program history with 2,868 career assists.

Other standouts for the Flames at the UIC Invitational included freshman Kara Johnson (42 kills, 34 digs and three aces), junior Molly McCoy (39 kills), junior Sara Sternard (36 kills, .272 attack percentage and 10 total blocks), junior Maggie Strus (46 digs), sophomore Tracy Friel (37 digs) and senior Justine Garcia (30 digs and four service aces).

Freshman Casey Harris matched her season high with seven kills on 13 attempts. Her .308 attack percentage marks a personal best.

The Flames travel to Iowa City, Iowa this weekend for the Hawkeye Challenge. UIC is scheduled to play against Western Illinois, Drake, Ball State and Iowa at the tournament.
