Bennett Klavan Memorial Lecture

The UIC College of Dentistry Department of Periodontics is pleased to invite you to the 2026 Bennett Klavan Memorial Lecture. This event honors Dr. Bennett Klavan, whose leadership helped establish periodontics as a department at the college and who later served as its first professor and department head.

This lecture is designed for periodontists, prosthodontists, oral surgeons and general dentists. It is eligible for 6.25 continuing education credits.

Learning objectives:

• Understand the shift from traditional interdisciplinary care to a unified biologic and biomechanical approach (periodontal prosthesis).
• Identify esthetic goals, biomechanical risk factors and appropriate abutment selection (teeth or implants) to support long-term success.
• Recognize when to use adjunctive orthodontics and forced eruption to improve space and manage soft tissue concerns.
• Apply key principles of tooth preparation, implant abutment design and restorative contouring.
• Describe the indications and basic principles of the S.M.A.R.T. technique for ridge augmentation.
• Outline current concepts in immediate implant placement and provisionalization to improve esthetic outcomes.
