Citizenship for All: Storytelling Through Nonggi

Date / Time

May 15, 2025

6:00 pm - 8:00 pm

Join Hull-House for a celebration of Chicago’s multiethnic and multigenerational immigrant legacies. Artist Aram Han Sifuentes, in partnership with HANA Center, brings traditional Korean folk banner-making to Hull-House through a workshop series and community gathering. In conjunction with Hull-House’s current exhibition, “Radical Craft: Arts Education at Hull-House,” this series celebrates over 130 years of craft, immigrant narratives and the fight for racial justice.

In two workshops at Hull-House, participants will learn to make nonggi, traditional Korean folk banners. Korean snacks and all materials will be provided. The workshops are free with registration and open to all skill levels.

The banners created in the workshops will be hung for public display in the Hull-House Courtyard at the community celebration on June 1.

Nonggi are traditional Korean folk banners used in farming rituals, festivals and community gatherings. The banners lift up prayers, a desire for well-being and a hope for social harmony so that the gods will receive the messages.

Beginning in 2023, HANA Center and Sifuentes have facilitated over 50 workshops for immigrants, Chicago youth, survivors of domestic violence and any community members who want to share their story and collectively envision a more just and equitable world for all.

RSVP for workshops on May 15 and 22.
