What is Exercise is Medicine?
Exercise is Medicine is a global health initiative co-launched in 2007 by the American College of Sports Medicine and the American Medical Association. The vision of Exercise is Medicine is simple but powerful: to make physical activity a standard part of health care and to connect individuals with movement opportunities that support long-term health and well-being.

Today, Exercise is Medicine exists in nearly 40 countries, helping health care providers and communities promote physical activity as a critical part of disease prevention and treatment. Research continues to show that regular movement can be just as effective as medication in reducing the risk of chronic conditions, boosting energy, improving sleep, and enhancing overall quality of life.

Exercise is Medicine On Campus brings this vision directly to colleges and universities, encouraging campuses to promote physical activity as a vital sign of health. At UIC, we are proud to celebrate Exercise is Medicine Month with events that inspire students, faculty and staff to move well and be well.

Celebrate Exercise is Medicine On Campus Month at UIC
Throughout October, Recreation and Wellbeing is spotlighting the many benefits of movement with free fitness classes, wellness activities, and opportunities to connect with your UIC community.

Events include:

Oct. 1: Nourish & Move: The Mindful Mile
Take a 1.5-mile campus walk that blends movement with mindful nutrition and hydration tips.
2:15-3:15 p.m., Start and end at the Student Recreation Facility

Oct. 3, 10, 17, 24, 31: Pop-up Group Fitness Classes
Join us every Friday for a different group fitness class to bring intentional movement to the end of your week — helping you feel grounded, energized and connected to your body.

Oct. 7, 14, 21, 28: Move Well, Be Well: QuickFit Analysis
Get a complimentary body composition analysis and meet with Exercise is Medicine coaches for guidance.
11 a.m.-noon

Oct. 8 and 22: Vinyasa Yoga
Flow through dynamic sequences that connect breath, strength and flexibility.
2:15-3:15 p.m., Sport and Fitness Center, Fitness Room 1

Oct. 10, 20, 21: F45 Functional Fitness
High-intensity, team-based workouts combining cardio and strength.
Sport and Fitness Center and Student Recreation Facility, F45 Studios

Oct. 13: Move Strong: Functional Circuit Training
Challenge your whole body with a high-energy HIIT circuit.
12:30-1:15 p.m., Student Recreation Facility, Functional Training Room

Oct. 30-Nov. 5: Vote — Mascot Challenge
Show your school spirit! Stay tuned to learn how to help UIC’s mascot climb to the top.

Oct. 31: F45 Costume Contest
Join a free F45 class in costume — prizes for creativity and energy!
