Join the UIC Social Justice Initiative, Black Studies and New Day Films for a film screening of “Massacre River: The Woman Without a Country.” The film follows Pikilina, a Dominican-born woman of Haitian descent, and her family as they navigate racial and political violence when the Dominican Republic reverses its birthright citizenship law in 2013. Pikilina is left stateless, along with over 200,000 others.
The film will be followed by a panel discussion moderated by Lola Ayisha Ogbara, Social Justice Initiative program director, in conversation with Lorgia García Peña, professor of Latinx studies at Princeton University; Manoucheka Celeste, associate professor of gender and women’s studies at UIC; and Natalie Bennett, director of the UIC Women’s Leadership and Resource Center.
