Geographic Information Systems (GIS) are technologies, research methods and visualization techniques that help us understand the spatial processes shaping our communities and environment. Whether you’re newly curious or an experienced analyst, GIS Day is a chance to explore innovative geospatial work, stay connected with evolving ideas and methods, and discover new ways to apply spatial thinking in your classroom, research and career.

Event schedule:
9:30 a.m.: Doors open, coffee
10 a.m.–noon: Research talks: Interdisciplinary presentations by UIC scholars using geospatial methods
Noon–1 p.m.: Student Poster Competition and lunch

Skills workshop: Coordinate systems in spatial analysis

Ever wonder if you’re using coordinate systems right? They matter because they affect your spatial analysis results. This workshop is designed for anyone who uses GIS or spatial methods but has never received formal training in coordinate systems or projections. We’ll demystify coordinate systems, walk through common projection pitfalls, and discuss the NSRS modernization taking effect next year (new datum drop!) — what’s changing, and how to update your data for improved accuracy. ArcGIS-focused, but applicable to other spatial data environments.
