Biography

Jeni Hebert-Beirne

Jeni Hebert-Beirne is a professor of community health sciences in UIC’s School of Public Health. A community-based participatory researcher, she emphasizes qualitative research to promote health equity and justice, with a focus on Chicago communities. Her community-engaged scholarship focuses on the lived experience of those most impacted by structural drivers of health inequities. She built capacity for communities to engage in research through the Community Science Certificate program, the youth summer academy, ChiPHI and the Life Scholars program.

Hebert-Beirne is the faculty lead of the National Institutes of Occupational Safety and Health-funded UIC Center for Healthy Work, which takes a community-based participatory research approach to addressing the impact of precarious work on community health in North Lawndale and Little Village.

She is a co-investigator and community engagement core co-lead of the National Institutes of Environmental Health Sciences-funded Chicago Center for Health and the Environment, and an administrative core lead of the Center for Extreme Conditions and Health Excellence. She is the founder and former inaugural director of the Collaboratory for Health Justice, former and inaugural associate dean for community engagement and a member of the Board of Directors of Community-Campus Partnerships for Health.
