Dr. Rachel Caskey

Dr. Rachel Caskey is the Earl M. Bane Professor and head of the department of medicine in the College of Medicine. Caskey is board-certified in internal medicine and pediatrics and practices at UI Health.

Caskey is a leader in maternal health. Her research focuses on novel system-level changes in healthcare settings to improve outcomes for women, children and families, with an emphasis on expanding access to postpartum care and reducing maternal morbidity and mortality. She collaborates with the Chicago Department of Public Health and the Illinois Department of Public Health on research, program evaluation and public health programming.

She co-leads the National Institutes of Health-funded UIC Maternal Health Research Center of Excellence, which is taking a system-level approach to addressing maternal health inequities. Similarly, she co-leads the Health Resources and Services Administration-funded Illinois Maternal Health Innovation award, an initiative to support maternal health work across the state and is developing a new behavioral healthcare model for non-urban areas in Illinois. She created the Luma Center in the Department of Medicine that houses these and other ongoing maternal health efforts.

She has an appointment at UIC’s School of Public Health in the Division of Maternal Child Health, where she previously taught core courses on health outcomes. She is a member of the University of Illinois Cancer Center, where she collaborates on efforts to reduce cervical cancer incidence.
