MEDIA ADVISORY: Convocation welcomes UIC’s largest class

Class of 2018 convocation

Close to 3,200 first-year students will enter the University of Illinois at Chicago this fall as members of the Class of 2019.

New students entering the University of Illinois at Chicago this fall – the largest class in five years – will be celebrated at the annual New Student Convocation, UIC’s induction ceremony for freshmen, transfer and international students. The event welcomes new students to the academic community and introduces the newest Flames to UIC traditions.

Sunday, Aug. 23, 3 p.m.

UIC Pavilion, 525 S. Racine Ave.

The 10th annual UIC Convocation honors new students and their guests with an official welcome, special guest speakers, presentations, and music by the UIC Pep Band. Campus spirit and traditions include the singing of the UIC Alma Mater, and the Lighting of the Flame, this year by Jauwan Hall, UIC’s student member of the University of Illinois Board of Trustees.

Convocation is immediately followed by the Chancellor’s New Student Block Party — featuring food, games, prizes and entertainment — behind the Student Residence and Commons at 700 S. Halsted St.

The new freshmen number 3,200, up 6 percent from last year. Transfer students number 1,575.
