Deadlines are approaching for three awards given to outstanding UIC employees. Winners will be recognized at the annual Employee Recognition Ceremony.

• June 30 is the deadline to nominate UIC employees for the INSPIRE Award, which recognizes long-term, consistent and outstanding professional service to the UIC community.

Anyone employed by UIC on the Chicago, Rockford and Peoria campuses, including faculty, staff and student workers, is eligible.

• Nominations are due June 28 for the Award of Merit, a $2,500 award given to up to 30 academic professional and support staff employees at the Employee Recognition Award Program Nov. 5.

To be eligible, employees must be at least 50 percent time and have worked at UIC for at least three years.

The award is given for excellence in work performance and leadership.

• Nominations are due June 28 for the Chancellor’s Academic Professional Excellence Award, given to academic professional staff. Six employees will receive the CAPE, which includes a $1,000 permanent increase to salary and a $2,000 cash award.

Quantifying with Qualtrics

UIC students, faculty and staff now have free access to Qualtrics, a web-based service for creating, publishing and analyzing survey data.

Qualtrics can be used for market research, tests, employee evaluations, website feedback and more. Potential UIC uses include surveying new students, measuring program satisfaction, course projects, scoring quizzes and collecting secure data.

The site is available through the Academic Computing and Communications Center, accc.uic.edu/service/surveys 

 

Circle Interchange background

Print documents related to the proposed Circle Interchange project are available for public viewing at the Daley Library reserve desk (library use only).

The documents, which include environmental impact, plans and community concerns, are also available online at www.circleinterchange.org

The Illinois Department of Transportation will hold a public hearing on the project June 27, 5 to 8 p.m., Crowne Plaza Hotel, 733 W. Madison.

 

Civil Service Employee Forum

The Staff Advisory Council will hold two question and answer sessions Thursday on issues related to civil service employees, including retirement, the classification process, seniority and bumping.

The sessions will be 9-11:30 a.m., Cardinal Room, Student Center East, and 2-4 p.m., Recovery Room, Student Center West.

Scheduled speakers include Chancellor Paula Allen-Meares (morning session); Robert Crouch, assistant vice president for human resources; Tom Morelock, executive director, State Universities Civil Service System; Lee Bridges, retirement counselor, State Universities Retirement System of Illinois; Jeff Houch, SURS legislative liaison; and Verna Chatman, university payroll and benefits.

Where to buy tickets

As of July 1, all discount tickets, stamps and CTA passes will be sold at the UIC bookstores instead of the student center service desks.

The bookstores in Student Center East and Student Center West will sell discount movie tickets to AMC, Regal Cinemas and Cinemark theaters and Six Flags. The bookstores will also provide campus vending refunds and ID replacement payments for the Student Center West ID Center.

Postdoc career advice

Two sessions on career advice for new scientists will be sponsored by the UIC Postdoctoral Association, the Graduate College and the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research:

• June 25: “Giving a Dynamic Research Talk,” Cynthia Fuhrmann, assistant dean of career and professional development, Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences, University of Massachusetts Medical School. Noon-1 p.m., lunch; 1-3 p.m., lecture

• June 28: “Job Hunting in the Biotech Industry: How to get a Job Offer as an Industry Scientist,” Bill Lindstaedt, director of career and professional development, University of California, San Francisco. Noon-12:30 p.m., lunch; 12:30-2 p.m., lecture.

 

Photographs of Vivian Maier

The work of elusive photographer Vivian Maier, a Chicago-area nanny whose work received acclaim after her death in 2009, will be shown and discussed June 29 at Jane Addams Hull-House Museum.

“Vivian Maier’s South Side” will present photographs, rare 8mm films of Maxwell Street and the Loop, and a short documentary on her life and legacy.

Maier made an estimated 140,000 photographs, mostly in and around Chicago.

Speakers include UIC photography professor Silvia Malagrino, Mike Bullis of Vivian Maier Photography and filmmaker Tom Palazzolo.
