Appointments

Hugo Teruel, interim director of the Latin American Recruitment and Educational Services (LARES), was named director.

He was associate director of LARES for almost 10 years.

In addition to his work on numerous campus committees and initiatives, he is chair of UIC’s Roadblocks for Undocumented committee and a board member of the Illinois Latino Council of Higher Education and the Illinois Board of Higher Education’s Hispanic Employment Plan for Higher Education committee.

A UIC graduate, he has a master’s degree in music composition from Roosevelt University. He has taught at UIC, Columbia College and Northeastern Illinois University.

 

Nadine Naber, associate professor of gender and women’s studies and Asian American studies, was named an international fellow of the Open Society Foundation’s Academic Fellowship Program for the 2013-14 academic year.

She will be an international adviser to the Institute of Women’s Studies at Birzeit University in Palestine, through long-distance mentoring and site visits.

 

Nik Theodore, professor of urban planning and policy, was named editor-in-chief of Antipode: A Radical Journal of Geography, published five times a year by Wiley.

 

Awards

UIC faculty award winners were honored Oct. 24 at a reception in Student Center East.

Those recognized at the event included:

• distinguished professors — Nissim Hay, professor of biochemistry and molecular genetics; Michael Stroscio, Richard and Loan Hill professor of electrical and computer engineering; and Philip Yu, Wexler chair in information technology

• Award for Excellence in Teaching — Janet Lin, professor of emergency medicine; Carol Myford, associate professor of educational psychology; and Ludwig Nitsche, associate professor of chemical engineering

• University Scholars — Carol Ferrans, professor of biobehavioral health science; Tanera Marshall, associate professor of theatre; Sudip Mazumder, professor of electrical and computer engineering; Mani Pavuluri, professor of psychiatry; William Teale, professor of curriculum and instruction; Nikos Varelas, professor of physics; and Donald Wink, professor of chemistry.

 

Medical and graduate students and postdoctoral fellows and associates were honored for their presentations at the Center for Cardiovascular Research Day in September.

Research poster presentation awards went to medical student Anthony Lucero; Alvin Lin, graduate student in physiology and biophysics; and Andrew Carley, postdoctoral associate in the Center for Cardiovascular Research and physiology and biophysics.

The center’s Young Investigator Award was presented to Ryan Lahey, an MD/PhD student and American Heart Association predoctoral fellow in the Medical Scientist Training Program.

Young Investigator Award finalists were Sudhahar Varadarajan, postdoctoral associate in the Center for Cardiovascular Research and cardiology, and Chongxu Zhang, postdoctoral associate in the Center for Cardiovascular Research and pulmonary medicine.

 

Ali Tafti, assistant professor of information and decision sciences, is one of two scholars to receive the Best Reviewer Award from the journal Information Systems Research. The award is based on the quality of reviews, including constructive feedback and timeliness.

 

Graduate student Eric Michel was awarded the university President’s Research in Diversity Travel Award. He will present work done with fellow student Courtney Masterson in January at the Africa Academy of Management Conference with Jenny Hoobler, associate professor of managerial studies.

Olivia Gude, Higher Education Arts Educator of the Year

Olivia Gude, professor of art and founding director of UIC’s Spiral Workshop art classes  for urban teens, was named Higher Education Art Educator of the Year by the Illinois Art Education Association.

The award, which acknowledges her contributions to art education throughout Northeastern Illinois, was presented at the association’s conference last month.

 

Honors

The University of Tokyo hosted a conference in honor of Steven Hurder, emeritus professor of mathematics, statistics and computer science. The conference, “Geometry and Foliations 2013,” held Sept. 9-14, was part of a tradition honoring mathematicians on their 60th birthday whose careers have had an outstanding impact on their field.
