Pursuing answers

UIC is among the nation’s top-tier research universities and is Chicago’s only public research institution. Driven by curiosity and a desire to make a positive impact on society, our faculty, staff and students are on a mission to solve real-world problems through innovation and discovery.

Shaping the future

UIC research improves the lives, health and well-being of communities both urban and rural, local and global. Whether it’s determining why Latinos carry a higher burden of certain ailments such as cardiovascular disease and diabetes, or using artificial intelligence to aid the state’s highway infrastructure, researchers are impacting how we live and learn.

Professor, College of Liberal Arts and Sciences

Hemley’s research cuts across physics, chemistry and planetary science through an exploration of the nature of materials under extreme pressure and temperature environments. The National Academy of Sciences member and fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences has played a key role in bringing grants to UIC that support the next generation of scientists and underrepresented students.

Research Changing Lives

UIC is among the nation’s 131 top research universities, according to the Carnegie Classification.
