Want music? Check out library’s online collection

The Daley Library knows more than books — just check out its vast collection of online music.

The library recently ended a 30-day trial for the online streaming music resource DRAM. The resource provides educational communities with on-demand streaming access to CD-quality audio from more than 3,700 albums. Whether the trial turns into a permanent subscription depends on the cost and feedback from the UIC community, said assistant reference librarian Steve Brantley.

DRAM isn’t the library’s only source of online music. The library subscribes to “Naxos Music Library,” “Jazz Music Library” and “Music Online.” There are even music-focused video collections: “Classical Music in Video” and “Opera in Video.”

Students and faculty use these resources for a variety of reasons, from casual listening to class assignments, Brantley said.

“Music criticism is another potential research use,” he said. “Some of our music faculty require students to listen to recordings in the same way they might assign books or articles.”
