Learn ways to prevent discrimination in the housing market at a workshop today.

“Law Talk: Fair Housing Rights,” also includes an overview of resources available to homeowners facing foreclosure. The workshop takes place from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. in the Commuter Student Resource Center, 245 Student Center East, behind the Wellness Center.

The event is sponsored by Student Legal Services and the John Marshall Law School Fair Housing Clinic.

Time for recess

UIC students can celebrate the end of spring semester with fun and games at Recess today.

The festival, from 4 to 7 p.m. in the Lecture Center Plaza, includes a roller skating rink, airbrush tattoos, food, giveaways, games and more.

The event is sponsored by Campus Programs and Undergraduate Student Government.

Rain date is May 1.

 

Assistance for student veterans

“Returning Veterans on Campus: a Primer,” an overview of the needs of military veterans in higher education, will be presented today, 3 to 4 p.m., in 1-470 Daley Library.

Tyler Mason, president of the UIC Student Veterans Association, and clinical psychologist Holly Passi will discuss how student veterans’ experiences are different from the general student population and how campus units can best serve them. Topics will include military culture, common deployment experiences, and transitions to civilian and university life.

 

How health reform affects you

Nicole Kazee, director of health policy and programs at UI Health, will present “The Affordable Care Act: What Does Health Reform Mean for You and Your Families?” Thursday at 11 a.m. in the Thompson Rooms, Student Center West.

Kazee is the keynote speaker for the spring meeting of UIC United, the UIC chapter of the State Universities Annuitants Association.

Work/life balance

Learn strategies for managing career and personal life at a Work/Life Balance seminar Thursday.

Susan Johnson, professor of obstetrics and gynecology at the University of Iowa, will speak from 10 to 11:30 a.m. in the Moss Auditorium, College of Medicine Research Building.

The event is sponsored by the Building Interdisciplinary Research Careers in Women’s Health program, Women in Science and Engineering Systems Transformation, and departments of obstetrics and gynecology, pediatrics and medicine.

Supporting student research

June 1 is deadline to apply for the 12th annual Alice J. Dan Dissertation Research Award and Clinical Translational Research Award.

The award encourages research about gender and/or women. UIC doctoral students who have an approved dissertation proposal can apply.

Awards range from $500 to $1,000. Winners will be announced in July.

White Sox day

UIC students, employees and alumni can purchase discounted White Sox tickets for UIC White Sox Night Friday.

The Daley Library will be open around the clock from 10 a.m. Sunday through 7 p.m. May 10.

The Library of the Health Sciences is now open continuously until midnight May 6.

 

Benefit payout


UIC employees can defer vacation and compensable sick leave payouts to their 403(b) and/or 457 retirement accounts when they retire or leave the university.
