Biography
Fifty million adults in the U.S. are affected by chronic pain, and nearly 20 million report high-impact chronic pain, according to the CDC. Treating chronic pain often involves prescribing opioids, which can, in some cases, lead to addiction.
Ardith Doorenbos, an expert in palliative care, studies alternatives to prescription opioids for pain management.
With more than 200 peer-reviewed publications to her name, she is working on four major NIH grants. Two grants explore effective substitutes for pain management: one targets adults with kidney disease and the other tackles sickle cell disease pain.
