The Mapping Care project is a publicly accessible, Black-centered history of nursing in Chicago. There is a long history of Black nurses in the United States, as well as in Chicago, traced as far back as 1825, with the manumission of Jensey Snow for nursing services she provided to the town of Petersburg, Virginia.
The project includes a traveling exhibit and website that highlight the stories of several Black nurses who are trusted and respected leaders in the Black community.
The History of Black Nurses in Chicago exhibit is on view in the lobby at the Library of the Health Sciences-Chicago from Sept. 15-Oct. 6 and features photographs from the UIC University Library’s Cook County School of Nursing records in Special Collections and University Archives.
The Mapping Care project is sponsored by the UIC Midwest Nursing History Research Center.
