The UIC Bilingualism Forum 2024 is an academic conference focused on research in all areas of bi/multilingualism. Topics include theoretical linguistics, code-switching, second-language acquisition, psycholinguistics, sociolinguistics, neurolinguistics, cognitive sciences, heritage languages and bi/multilingual acquisition, among other related topics.

The conference, organized by graduate students, began in 2009 and has attracted presenters from more than 10 countries. The conference is a great opportunity for graduate students to meet other scholars in the field and to showcase their work. It is also one of the few conferences focused on bilingualism, and it brings together prominent researchers in this diverse field.

Speakers

Uju Anya began her linguistic trajectory by obtaining her doctorate at the University of California, Los Angeles. She is currently an associate professor of second language acquisition in the Modern Languages Department at Carnegie Mellon University. Her scholarly interests lay at the intersection of applied linguistics, critical sociolinguistics and critical discourse studies examining race, gender, sexual and social class identities in new language learning through the experiences of African American students.

Judith Kroll is a distinguished professor at the University of California, Irvine. She earned her doctorate at Brandeis University. Kroll leads groundbreaking studies delving into the intricate dynamics of bilingualism within the human mind and brain. Backed by prestigious grants from both the National Science Foundation and National Institutes of Health, her research illuminates the complex interplay between language and cognition, showcasing how bilingualism is a revealing lens into cognitive processes otherwise obscured in monolingual speakers.
