ACA Enrollment Deadline: “March 31 could be the most important deadline of your life if you are African American, ” says Dr. Robert Winn, associate vice president for community-based practice at the University of Illinois Hospital & Health Sciences System. African Americans carry a disproportionate burden of disease, including some of the highest rates of cancer, diabetes and hypertension. Winn says that enrolling in health insurance and utilizing health care services could go a long ways towards improving the health of the African-American population in the U.S. Contact Sharon Parmet, (312) 413-2695; sparmet@uic.edu

Ukraine: The current crisis in Ukraine comes out of a long history of conflict with Russia. Ryan Maness, UIC adjunct assistant professor in political science, has written on Russian cyber and energy coercive power and the probability of conflict following the collapse of the Soviet Union. He is available for comment. Contact Jeanne Galatzer-Levy, (312)  996-1583; jgala@uic.edu

Google Glass Ban: Legislation banning the use of Google Glass while driving is under consideration in Illinois and other states. Steve Jones, UIC distinguished professor of communication and a Google Glass “explorer,” says drivers would be better served by audio delivery of useful information from Google Glass, which he expects to play a future role in the widespread use of screens integrated with car windshields. Unionizing College Sports: Robert Bruno, director of Labor Education Program at UIC, says the announcement that football players have petitioned the NLRB to allow them to form a union reflects the reality that big-time college sports are an enormously profitable business. “Young men performing in front of a national television audience and 100,000 paying customers are doing labor, ” Bruno says.
