Weekly Advisory: August 11, 2014
UIC Experts
CPS Test Scores: The percentage of students above a given threshold doesn’t tell much about either end of the distribution, and may indicate that educators “work the bubble” with students most likely to cross the threshold, says Paul Zavitkovsky, assessment specialist in UIC Urban Education Leadership. His research has shown that “working the bubble” is a very widespread practice. Contact Anne Brooks Ranallo, (312) 355-2523; aranallo@uic.edu
Disease Decline: Effective new drugs and screenings would make hepatitis C, the leading cause of liver cancer accounting for more than 15,000 U.S. deaths each year, a rare disease by 2036, according to a new computer simulation. Juliana Chan, UIC clinical associate professor of pharmacy practice, can comment. Contact Sam Hostettler, (312) 355-2522; samhos@uic.edu
School Stress: A relaxing and peaceful summer is over for many children, and a new school year is near. A hectic school and extracurricular schedule may be stressful to both parents and children, which could lead to health problems. UIC clinical psychologist Sheela Raja can comment. Contact Sam Hostettler, (312) 355-2522; samhos@uic.edu
Teeth Test: Illinois law requires all children entering kindergarten, second and sixth grades to have an oral health examination. Dr. Marcio da Fonseca, UIC professor and head of pediatric dentistry, can speak about children’s oral health issues. Contact Sam Hostettler, (312) 355-2522; samhos@uic.edu
