Building skills for success
University President Bob Easter joined Chancellor Paula Allen-Meares Oct. 9 at one of the chancellor’s regular breakfast meetings with faculty members.

Two faculty members from each college are invited to the meetings, where discussion includes campus priorities, accomplishments and challenges.

Vote for your favorite student organization performance Thursday at the UIC Cultural Showcase.

The event begins at 6 p.m. in Student Center East’s Illinois Room.

Student groups set to perform include Dhamaal, Dilinois A Capella, Filipinos in Alliance, Fuego, Hellenic Student Association, La Unidad Latina, Lambda Upsilon Lambda Fraternity, Latin Dance Styles, Movimiento Latino, Nazaara, Primo Dance Troupe, Serbian Student Organization and Students for Justice in Palestine.

Audience members join faculty and staff judges in selecting the top performances.

History in action
Food, games and politics are on the ballot at a campus-sponsored Election Results Party Nov. 6, 7 to 11 p.m. in Thompson Room A, Student Center West.

Students can play “Election Style Jeopardy” while they watch live coverage of presidential election returns.

Events begin with a screening of the movie “The Campaign” from 3 to 5 p.m. at the Commuter Student Resource Center, 240-248 Student Center East behind the Inner Circle food court.

Students wearing an “I voted today” sticker are eligible for prizes.

The event is sponsored by Campus Programs, Campus Housing, Undergraduate Student Government and the department of political science.

Soup’s on the move
The Hull-House Museum’s Re-Thinking Soup will host a special off-campus event today at the Chicago Architecture Foundation’s Lecture Hall Gallery, 224 S. Michigan Ave.

Tomato basil soup will be served, along with conversation on food diversity in Chicago. The event begins at 12:15 p.m.

Presenters include Laura Bowe, co-director of Architecture for Humanity-Chicago; Aaron Joseph, Chicago’s deputy sustainability officer; and Lisa Lee, director of Hull-House Museum.

 

Hungry?
Celebrate national Food Day this week with food discounts, free food and information on making healthy choices.

Students can visit the Wellness Center, 248 Student Center East, for information on Food Day events, then take the information to Tropical Smoothie Café in the Student Recreation Facility or School of Public Health for 10 percent off.

On Thursday, students and employees can make their own trail mix for free from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Wellness Center.

UIC convenience stores and carts — in Student Center East, Behavioral Sciences Building and Student Services Building — will feature daily deals on healthy food options, such as salads, wraps, yogurt and fruit.

The UIC Bookstore has a special display of books this week about healthy living.

The events are sponsored by the Wellness Center, Retail Operations and the Center for Science in the Public Interest.

 

Vote on tenure committee
Tenured and tenure-track faculty can vote through Thursday for eight faculty members to serve on the Promotion and Tenure Committee.

Vote online through 11 a.m. Thursday.

 

Recognizing employees
Celebrate award-winning employees Nov. 1 at the Employee Recognition Awards Program.

The event honors the 2012 recipients of the Award of Merit, CAPE Award, WOW, INSPIRE and Luminary Awards. Employees with 25, 30, 35, 40 and 45 years of service will also be recognized.

The ceremony begins at 11 a.m. and a formal reception follows at the UIC Forum.

Breast cancer awareness
The radiology department offers walk-in mammography screenings for UIC employees throughout October for Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Screenings are held from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Outpatient Care Center, Suite 2C.

Employees’ insurance must approve a referral to the hospital. Call 312-996-0267 for eligibility.

 

New location for payroll, benefit offices
The Payroll Customer Service office and the Benefits Office have new temporary locations on the fourth floor of the Marshfield Building due to remodeling.

The payroll office will move upstairs from 106 Marshfield Building. Hours will be 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., phone 312-996-7200.

The Benefits Office will move to the fourth floor of the Marshfield Building from its current location in the Human Resource Building. Hours will be 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., phone 312-996-6471.

The remodeling should be completed by summer 2013.

 

Concert benefits students
Rock and Roll Hall of Famers the Four Tops will headline the 12th annual S.E.E. Benefit Nov. 30.

The event, hosted by the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs, funds scholarships for UIC students who demonstrate strong leadership skills.

Researcher of the Year
Nominations are due Thursday for 2012 Researcher of the Year, awarded to five faculty members chosen from the research categories of basic life sciences, clinical sciences, natural sciences and engineering, social sciences and humanities.

The award includes a $5,000 prize.

The 2011 winners were Gail Prins, professor of urology; Cecilia Gerber, professor of physics; and Susan Hughes, professor of community health sciences.

Dec. 3 is the deadline for nominations for honorary degree recipients.

Fun with pets
Furnetic/Chicago Center for Veterinary Medicine, a clinic of the U of I College of Veterinary Medicine, will host its annual Fall Frolic Saturday.

Pets and their owners can enjoy treats, pet tricks, photos and games from 10 a.m. to noon at Furnetic, 2242 W. Harrison St., Suite 101.

 

Safe Zone training
The Gender and Sexuality Center presents Safe Zone training workshops to heighten awareness of LGBTQ issues.

Programs include information on sexual and gender identity issues, policies that affect LGBTQ individuals and strategies for creating inclusive environments.

Events on campus for Hispanic Heritage Month include:

• “We Overcame Torture,” conversation with Italia Mendez of the Campaign against Political Repression and Sexual Torture, 3 to 4:30 p.m. today, Latino Cultural Center, Lecture Center B2.

• “Lemon,” PBS VOCES documentary on spoken word artist Lemon Andersen, Tuesday. Reception 5 p.m. before the 5:30 p.m. screening, Cardinal Room, Student Center East. A 30-minute discussion follows.

The screening is hosted by the UIC Office of Community Affairs and WTTW-TV.

 

Contest for young musicians
Exceptional young musicians will be selected to perform with the UIC Orchestra or Concert Band in the Youth Concerto Competition.

The contest, sponsored by the department of theatre and music, is for students age 11 to 18. Winners receive $250.

Musicians who play orchestral instruments can apply; pianists or vocalists are not eligible.

Applications are due Nov. 15. The competition takes place Dec. 8.
