Campus News: UIC Homecoming
UIC will highlight school spirit during homecoming week, which continues through Saturday.
The celebration, which is coordinated by the Student Activities Board in partnership with many campus organizations, is centered on showing Flames pride and building a deeper sense of community.
The culmination of homecoming week is Friday with the homecoming dance. At 12:30 p.m. Friday, in the quad, students, faculty and staff will meet to snap a special Flames Friday picture that captures on-campus school spirit. Then at 8 p.m., the second annual homecoming dance begins in the Aon Grand Ballroom at Navy Pier. Tickets to the dance are $12 and shuttles to and from campus are provided.
The men’s basketball team has two homecoming games scheduled: Thursday versus Youngstown State at 7 p.m. and Saturday against Cleveland State at 3 p.m. at the UIC Pavilion. Students receive free admission to all basketball games with a valid i-card.
Student disciplinary policy
The Student Disciplinary Policy outlines expectations for student behavior on and off campus. Information was updated in the policy related to recent federal and state legislative requirements.
The policy information has also been reformatted for clarity and ease-of-use.
Honoring researchers
The UIC community is invited to a reception to honor recipients of the Researcher and Scholar of the Year Awards.
The ceremony, hosted by the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research, takes place from 3:30 to 6 p.m. Feb. 16 in the Michele M. Thompson Rooms in Student Center West.
Transit investment
Greater London’s transit agenda — and how it provides a potential template for funding large-scale projects in metropolitan Chicago — will be explored Feb. 16 during the first installment of the spring 2017 Seminar Series presentation hosted by the Urban Transportation Center at UIC.
UIC alumnus Chris Hall, who worked as a consultant to Transport for London, will lead the discussion, which begins at noon in the Great Cities Institute conference room, fourth floor at CUPPA Hall.
Student advocacy
Student Advocacy Services in the Office of the Dean of Students assists students faced with personal challenges that may conflict with their ability to be successful at UIC.
Whether students are dealing with issues of crime victimization, safety and security, health emergencies, homelessness, food insecurities, financial problems, family issues, or interpersonal concerns, the office will help advocate for their needs.
Recognizing student service
Nominations are now being accepted for the Chancellor’s Student Service and Leadership Awards.
The volunteerism and leadership awards include the Chancellor’s Student Service Award, Eugertha Bates Memorial Award and Jane Addams Distinguished Service Award. Students may also be nominated for induction into the Activities Honorary Society. Outstanding undergraduate, graduate and professional students who have given their time and talent to campus or community service can be nominated for the awards.
Nominations can be submitted until 5 p.m. Friday.
Winners will be presented at the 45th Annual Chancellor’s Student Service and Leadership Awards Ceremony April 20.
