Appointments

Saul Weiner, professor of medicine, pediatrics and medical education and senior associate dean for educational affairs in the College of Medicine, was named vice provost for planning and programs in the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs.

Awards

Natalie Zine, a sophomore majoring in anthropology, was named an inaugural Language Intensive Focus Track (LIFT) Scholar by CIEE, an international and cultural exchange program.

The scholarship will allow her to extend her current study of the Portuguese language for the spring 2013 term through CIEE’s Language and Culture program in Lisbon.

Zine began studying Portuguese while studying abroad in Brazil during high school.

Andrew Rojecki, associate professor of communication, is co-principal investigator of a project funded by a grant from the Foundation to Promote Open Society, in collaboration with the Open Society Institute.

Rojecki will work with researchers from the School of Media and Public Affairs at George Washington University to study racial anxiety and racial appeals, as reflected in media coverage of the presidential elections, and provide journalists with best practices to avoid perpetuating racial stereotypes of African Americans.

Elections

Operating engineer Mark Murphy was elected to the State Universities Civil Service Advisory Committee for a term beginning this month and ending December 2016.

Other candidates in the election were hospital storekeeper Albert J. Finley Jr., UIC Police Sgt. Jason Huertas, pipefitter Glenn Martin and hospital customer service representative Regina Russell.
