E-sccoters exploded on the urban transportation scene around the U.S. over the last two years, pushing the previous hype cycle’s dockless bikes nearly off the stage almost overnight. Micromobility generally, and scooters in particular, open up a host of conversations about access, safety, and the public and private roles in determining how we use the public way. The Shared-Use Mobility Center, a Chicago-based public interest nonprofit, has been studying scooter and bike-sharing around the country and gathering lessons and best practices on this burgeoning mobility market. This presentation will take a look at the outcomes of Chicago’s recently concluded scooter pilot and put it in context with what’s happening in cities whose micromobility policy approaches range from highly regulated in every aspect to “scooters gone wild.”
