Benefit for world health

“Working for the World,” a benefit to support the UIC Center for Global Health, is set for 6 to 9 p.m. Sept. 18.

The event, at the National Museum of Mexican Art, 1852 W. 19th St., includes a cocktail reception, silent auction, global trivia contest and door prizes. Tickets are $125. Donations will benefit the center’s Global Medical Educational program and support students working on service projects in Guatemala, Haiti, Uganda, Vietnam and Senegal.

UI Health hosts soccer, picnic

UI Health’s third annual employee night Sept. 13 features a picnic and discount tickets to the Chicago Fire Soccer Club vs. Toronto FC game at Toyota Park.

Employees and their families get discounted tickets for $15, normally $28. The price includes the picnic, featuring food, drink, giveaways and games.

The Chicago Fire offers bus service to games from several city locations.

 

Dance and learn

Do some career networking and learn salsa dancing Sept. 12 when Applied Health Sciences alumni, students, faculty and staff head to Chicago SummerDance.

The get-together at the city’s free summertime public dance series will be held from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. at the Grant Park Spirit of Music Garden, 601 S. Michigan Ave. David Marquez, associate professor of kinesiology, will discuss the health benefits of dance. Stroll through the garden

The College of Pharmacy will host the 2014 Garden Walk and Lesniewicz Memorial Lecture Aug. 29 to celebrate the only urban medicinal plant garden in Chicago.

The event will feature tours of the Dorothy Bradley Atkins Medicinal Plant Garden from 10 a.m. to noon and 1:30 to 3 p.m. Memory Elvin-Lewis, biology professor at Washington University, presents a keynote lecture, “Understanding Traditional Healing Plants of Tropical Rainforests in Northern South America,” from noon to 1:30 p.m. in 32 Pharmacy.

The Dorothy Bradley Atkins Medicinal Plant Garden contains more than 200 species of medicinal plants, including black cohosh, purple coneflower and foxglove, whose chemical compounds are used in clinical practice around the world.

 

Catching clinics

UIC head softball coach Michelle Venturella will hold an 11-week catcher’s clinic for young athletes Sept. 2 through Nov. 11.

The clinic is open to players ages 8 to 18 and takes place from 6 to 7 p.m. on Tuesdays at Flames Field. Each session focuses on the elements of catching, from blocking and throwing to framing and calling a game.

Nominate outstanding UIC grads for the 2015 Alumni Awards program through Aug. 31.

Run for a good cause

Sign up to run the Chicago Marathon and raise money for diabetes research with UIC’s Cellmates on the Run team.

The team, organized by José Oberholzer, chief of transplantation surgery, raises money for the Chicago Diabetes Project. Last year’s marathon team raised about $200,000 for diabetes research. The 2014 Bank of America Chicago Marathon, a 26.2-mile race through 26 Chicago neighborhoods, is scheduled for Oct. 12.

 

Benefit for student athletes

UIC Athletics hosts the 21st annual Scholarship Classic Aug. 28, benefitting student athlete scholarships.

The event takes place at the Bolingbrook Golf Club, 2001 Rodeo Drive. Cost is $6,600 for three foursomes (12 people), $2,500 per foursome, $650 for a single golfer, $400 for selected hole signage, and $125 for dinner and drinks only. A portion of every ticket is tax deductible.

Registration, breakfast and a putting contest begin at 9 a.m., with golf starting at 10:30 a.m. Lunch will be served on the course during the round, followed by a cocktail hour and dinner. A silent auction will take place after dinner.

See the campus

UIC welcomes prospective students, families and the public to the second annual Open House Sept. 13.

The event, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., offers information, campus tours, activities, demonstrations and chances to learn more about student life and housing. Colleges, departments and units can participate in the Open House Exhibit Hall. Academic units can offer programming for the event. More than 5,000 visitors attended last year’s open house.

 

Urban neighborhoods

The 2014 Urban Forum will spotlight “The Return of the Neighborhood as an Urban Strategy.”

The event, Sept. 18 at the UIC Forum, examines the complexities of metropolitan regions. Co-chairs include UIC Chancellor Paula Allen-Meares, Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle and Susana Vasquez, executive director of LISC/Chicago. For more information, call 312-413-2194.
