Celebrate South Asian American culture

A gallery reception from 4 to 6 p.m. Thursday opens “South Asian American History, Culture and Community,” an exhibit in the A. Montgomery Ward Gallery, Student Center East.

The exhibit features historical text and photos of South Asian American immigrant communities, family photos from the UIC and Chicago community, and informational displays from the South Asian American Policy and Research Institute.

Admission is free. The gallery is open from noon to 9 p.m. Monday through Thursday and noon to 5 p.m. Friday.

Get engaged, in a civic way

Civic engagement will be the lunchtime topic at three talks this fall presented by the Institute for Policy and Civic Engagement. All are from noon to 1 p.m. in the Daley Library Conference Room 1-470. A light lunch will be served.

• Oct. 1: “Big Data Integration to Enable Citizen Participation in Smart Cities,” Isabel Cruz, computer science

• Oct. 29: “Training Parents of Students with Disabilities: Using Technology to Enhance Civic Engagement,” Meghan Burke, special education, Urbana, and Linda Sandman, Developmental Disabilities Family Clinic

• Nov. 5: “From Revolution to Evolution: The Role of Social Media for Civic Engagement,” Elaine J. Yuan, communication, and graduate students Miao Feng and Xiyuan Liu.

Diversity Career Fair

The 37th annual Fall Diversity Career Fair, sponsored by the Office of Career Services, is set for 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Thursday at the UIC Forum.

UIC students and alumni of all majors will find full-time, part-time and internship opportunities from for-profit, nonprofit and government organizations. Job seekers should dress professionally, have proof of UIC affiliation and bring multiple copies of their résumés.

Women against heart disease

Three women scientists who are working to cure heart disease, the leading cause of death for both men and women, will discuss their research at 2 p.m. today in Lecture Center A4. They are Brenda Russell, professor emerita of physiology and biophysics, Daniela Valdez-Jasso, assistant professor of bioengineering, and Joan Briller, associate professor of medicine.

The event is presented by the Women in Science & Engineering Program.

Webinars on survey research

The Survey Research Laboratory offers four introductory webinars on survey research methodology on Wednesdays in October. All are from noon to 1 p.m.

The sessions include “Introduction to Survey Sampling” Oct. 8, presented by Karen Retzer; “Introduction to Web Surveys” Oct. 15, Timothy Johnson; “Introduction to Questionnaire Design” Oct. 22, Allyson Holbrook; and “Introduction to Survey Data Analysis” Oct. 29, Linda Owens.
