Gender in election

The political science department will present “Hillary, Trump and the Press: Gender and the 2016 U.S. Election,” a panel discussion examining issues of gender bias and partisanship in media coverage of the 2016 presidential campaign.

The event takes place at 3:15 p.m.Oct. 25 in the UIC Institute for the Humanities, lower level, Stevenson Hall.

Panelists include Lali Abril Puig, UIC assistant professor of communication; Laurel Harbridge Yong, associate professor of political science at Northwestern University; and Monica Schneider, associate professor of political science at Miami University (Ohio).

The discussion will be moderated by Alexandra Filindra, assistant professor of political science. An audience Q&A will follow.

Future of Chicago

Cook County Commissioner Jesus “Chuy” Garcia presents a lecture on campus today as part of the “Future of Chicago” lecture series.

His talk, “Reform in Chicago and Cook County,” takes place from noon to 12:50 p.m. in Lecture Center C1.

Flu shots

Free flu shots for UIC employees and retirees will be offered Oct. 25.

The flu shots will be given from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Thompson Rooms, Student Center West.

State employees and retirees enrolled in the Quality Care Health Plan or state-sponsored managed care insurance plans are eligible.

Employees must present health insurance card and i-card. Retirees and survivors must present state-sponsored health insurance card and state ID or driver’s license.

Civil Service election

An election to select one representative to the State Universities Civil Service Advisory Committee to the Merit Board will be held Oct. 25.

The election will be held via electronic ballot from 12:01 a.m. until 11:59 p.m.

Absentee ballots are available in 109 Human Resources Building through Monday.

Future of Illinois

The UIC Chapter of the State University Annuitants Association hosts its Fall Forum with leaders in education and metropolitan development Oct. 26.

University President Tim Killeen and Peter Skosey, former executive vice president of the Metropolitan Planning Council, will share their perspectives and welcome your questions about the future of Illinois.

The event begins with an informal lunch at noon and the presentation from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. in 302 Student Center East.

Honoring researchers

Letters of intent can be submitted through Friday for the 2016 UIC Researcher and Scholar of the Year Award program.

The awards program, sponsored by the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research, celebrates the efforts and commitment individuals who are advancing knowledge in their area of research and scholarship. These individuals inspire and promote continued excellence at UIC.

Nominations are due Nov. 9.
