Chalk Art 4 Environmental Justice, featuring Chicago Artist Cori Nakamura Lin 

Presented by the Latino Cultural Center and the Asian American Resource Center 

Join the LCC and AARC in creating chalk art in honor of Earth Month! 

Chalk art has historically been used as a guerilla art technique to bring issues of social justice in a temporary way to permanent institutions. This is an open studio where Chicago artist Cori Nakamura Lin will be creating their own chalk art piece while providing tips for creating illustrations and ecological art. Create your own design or write an environmental slogan for environmental justice along with the UIC community!

Create an Earth Month chalk art piece outside of the LCC related to one of the following themes: climate resilience, community resistance and/or clean air, land and water.

No professional art skills necessary, everyone welcome!* 

Materials for poster-making will also be available.

Time: 1-3 p.m. 

Where: Outside of the Latino Cultural Center, Lecture Center B2

Cori Nakamura Lin: (she/her) is an illustrator, archivist and community organizer. Cori’s art roots her communities in collective struggle by visualizing marginalized narratives and illuminating concepts of abolition, care and generational curse-breaking. Her work has been published by HarperCollins, the LA Times, the History Channel, WBEZ Chicago and more. By pushing us to imagine future(s) beyond this current dimension, Cori makes art that fuels action. She organizes with Nikkei Uprising.

If you would like to submit a design to ensure your artwork has a dedicated space, please email Nat Ayala (nayala3@uic.edu) by Monday, April 15. Student organizations and collectives are especially encouraged to submit a sketch. Materials will be provided during the program for anyone who would like to create their own chalk art outside of the LCC! All skill levels are welcome, no experience required.
