From MLK to Ferguson: Open house and panel discussion

Date / Time

January 15, 2025

12:00 pm - 6:00 pm

Join the Chicago Justice Gallery on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday for an open house in our gallery and a conversation about the ongoing relevance of King’s speech “Beyond Vietnam: Breaking the Silence,” which he delivered at Riverside Church on April 4, 1967, exactly one year before his death.

Noon – 4 p.m.: Open house
4 – 6 p.m.: Panel discussion
Our panelists, scholar-activists from UIC, will explore King’s provocative quote, “We as a nation must undergo a radical revolution of values. We must rapidly begin the shift from a thing-oriented society to a person-oriented society.” We will discuss what his message means today and how it relates to our current gallery exhibition, “Echoes of Ferguson.”
The roundtable discussion moderated by Barbara Ransby will include sociologist Atef Said, musician and scholar Johari Jabir, sociologist Patrisia Macías-Rojas and sociologist Andy Clarno. Please stop by the open house for refreshments and to view our “Echoes of Ferguson” exhibition, curated by Lola Ayisha Ogbara.

Space is limited, so RSVP today. Masks are strongly encouraged.
