Together we can keep as much out of the landfill as possible! The best and most effective strategy to minimize waste is to reduce, especially the use of one-time-use items. If you cannot reduce, try to reuse and recycle your items. This event, in partnership with Reduce Waste Chicago and Eco & the Flamingo, will give UIC students and employees a chance to bring books and clean clothes in good condition for swapping. Additionally, you can recycle items that cannot traditionally go in the regular recycling stream, but can be sorted and recycled through specialty methods.

Items accepted for recycling will include:

  • Books.
  • Clothes and textiles.
  • Gym shoes.
  • Dental products – toothpaste tubes, floss containers.
  • Food storage containers – take-out grade, not #6 or the baked goods flimsy plastic.
  • Plastic cards — gift/membership/credit cards.
  • Disposable face masks.
  • Random cords and cables.
  • Hygiene packaging – deodorants, disposable shavers, the flexible packaging that it comes in.
  • Solo cups.
  • Small electronics and appliances.
  • Amazon and mailing packaging.
  • Contact lenses, packaging and contact cases.
  • Eyeglasses.
  • Holiday lights.
