Lorelei Stewart
Director and Chief Curator of UIC Gallery 400
Biography
Lorelei Stewart is the director and chief curator of UIC’s Gallery 400, the contemporary art space of the university. Stewart is a seasoned member of UIC’s and Chicago’s vibrant contemporary arts scene, who co-founded the UIC Museum and Exhibition Studies program within the School of Art and Art History and serves as a lecturer. She has supported artistic creativity and presented groundbreaking programs of contemporary art and architecture, inspiring audiences’ imaginations. Stewart’s expertise includes exhibition development; the role art plays in shaping civic conversations and ideas; cultivating collaboration and partnerships; and leading with a focus on equity, inclusion, and care.
Stewart has championed UIC Gallery 400’s mission to present and support the leading edge of contemporary art, architecture and design by organizing over 50 exhibitions, including the two Joyce Award-winning exhibitions “Edgar Arceneaux: The Alchemy of Comedy …Stupid” and “Adela Goldbard: The Last Judgment/El Juicio Final.” She initiated the acclaimed “At the Edge: Innovative Art in Chicago” series, a commissioning program that encouraged experimental practices among artists in the Chicago area.
