During the “Arab Spring” uprisings, Egyptian citizens relied on Twitter to send and receive news and information after the government suppressed mainstream media and cut Internet access.
Twitter use during these events partly reflected traditional news values but also “pushed forward a new form of news,” says Zizi Papacharissi, a scholar who studies the social and political consequences of new media.
Her co-edited book “Trump and the Media,” looks at the presidential election of Donald Trump and the disruption in the news and social media.
Her book, “A Private Sphere: Democracy in Digital Age,” examines how online media redefines public-versus-private in modern democracies and sets new parameters for civic engagement.
She teaches courses on communication theory, political communication, the information society, digital democracy, and communication research methods.
