Give back to student scholarships, programs on #GivingTuesday
Amid all the frenzy of holiday shopping, there’s a holiday Dec. 1 to put your money where it counts: toward UIC student scholarships and programs on Giving Tuesday.
“This movement is a statement that says, ‘OK, everybody can help as gifts of any size matter. It is a day to think of others, particularly our tenacious and resilient students who need our help,’” said Jeff Nearhoof, vice chancellor for advancement, whose office is coordinating Giving Tuesday (#GivingTuesday on social media).
All across campus, from the east side to the west side, tables will be set up in campus buildings to accept donations. UIC Student Ambassadors will be helping out; Chancellor Michael Amiridis and men’s basketball coach Steve McClain will do their part, too.
“#GivingTuesday is not just a one-day event, but a set of values we students at UIC truly embody,” said Joanna Thompson, president of the Graduate Student Council and a Ph.D. candidate in criminology, law and justice. “#GivingTuesday is truly a reminder to continue to give back in many ways.”
The goal is to surpass last year’s totals: $46,624 and 602 donors (101 of them students).
“Mission-based philanthropy sets us apart and puts UIC closer to achieving our big dreams. Together we make more things happen on campus,” Nearhoof said.
