New Mile Square Health Center opens in Humboldt Park
Mile Square Health Center has opened a new clinic with a focus on women’s health services for patients with physical disabilities in the Humboldt Park neighborhood.
The new federally qualified health center is staffed by family nurse practitioners and certified nurse midwives and is managed in association with the University of Illinois Hospital & Health Sciences System and the University of Illinois at Chicago’s College of Nursing.
The Humboldt Park Mile Square Health Center is equipped to serve patients who are physically disabled with specialized exam rooms to accommodate wheelchairs and lifts to help patients onto exam tables.
“The Humboldt Park Mile Square Health Center really builds on UI Health’s commitment to provide local health care services beyond what the typical neighborhood clinic offers,” said Dr. Robert Winn, associate vice president for community-based practice at UI Health.
“In this new health center, we can care for women with physical limitations or reduced mobility right here in their own community who are looking for high-quality OB/GYN services in a fully accessible setting.”
Most of the staff of the new clinic lives in the Humboldt Park community, Winn said.
The clinic offers primary care for men and women of all ages in addition to birth control, menopause management and newborn care. Patients who need mammography or radiology services can receive them through referral to nearby community hospitals including Saints Mary and Elizabeth Medical Center and Norwegian American Hospital.
The clinic “fills a gap in the existing health care options in Humboldt Park,” said Emily Brigell, director of nurse-managed clinics for the UIC College of Nursing. Doulas, midwives and water births are available through a partnership with Saints Mary and Elizabeth Medical Center.
“Water birth is a choice many women are interested in exploring for their deliveries, but it is not available throughout Chicago,” said Brigell. “It is another option we offer for women who are looking to lead the decision-making process when it comes to their birth plan.”
The Humboldt Park Mile Square Health Center is located at 3240 West Division Street. For more information or to make an appointment, call (312) 413-7425.
