Paid Research Study for Mothers and Children

Dr. Katie Burkhouse (Ph.D.) at The University of Illinois at Chicago is conducting a research study on mothers and their children. In this study, we are testing to see how interventions for the prevention of depression affect brain function, behavior, and mental health.

You may be eligible if you:
1. Are 18-65 years old and female.
2. Have a biological child who is between 9 and 15 years of age.
3. Have a history of major depressive disorder.

If you are eligible and agree to participate you and your child will undergo:
1. Psychiatric Interviews.
2. Two electroencephalogram (EEG) assessments to non-invasively measure brain function.
3. EITHER 6 months of a group based talk therapy called family group based cognitive behavioral therapy
4. OR 6 months of psychoeducation (reading written materials providing education on depression risk and treatment)
5. Follow-up assessments to monitor moods and feelings

Interested volunteers should have no major medical or neurological illness. Volunteers taking certain medications that affect the brain may not qualify for the study. This study involves a time commitment of approximately 17 hours over 2 visits for families assigned to receive psychoeducation and approximately 25 hours over 22 visits for families assigned to receive group therapy.

Volunteers will be compensated for their time. Volunteers must be US citizens or permanent residents. All information you give is confidential.
