Architecture faculty member Jiminez Lai

Appointments

Shane Phillips, associate professor of physical therapy in the College of Applied Health Sciences, was appointed to the Exercise Physiology Content Task Force of the American Physical Therapy Association Academic Council.

Jill Rothamer, director of Campus Programs, was named director of the UIC Experience, a campus certificate program in the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs.

The UIC Experience encourages students to get involved in learning experiences outside the classroom in urban exploration, inquiry and research, and community and diversity.

Mark Manderino, who worked in student affairs at DePaul University, was named student engagement assessment director for the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs.

Awards

Saba Khan, clinical assistant professor and program director of periodontics in the College of Dentistry, received the American Academy of Periodontology Foundation Teaching Fellowship Award.

The $50,000 award, given to an exceptional faculty member within the first three years of teaching, is intended to help with educational debt and support a career as an educator.

Suzie Ahn, a resident in restorative dentistry in the College of Dentistry, was awarded a $4,000 Tylman Grant from the American Academy of Fixed Prosthodontics.

 

Publications

Jiminez Lai, assistant professor of architecture and founder of Bureau Spectacular, was profiled in Architect, the magazine of the American Institute of Architects. Lai, who appeared on the magazine’s cover, was featured in a story on millennials changing the practice of architecture.

“I took a year off and lived and worked in a desert shelter in Taliesin and later in a shipping container at Atelier Van Lieshout on the piers of Rotterdam,” he says.
