First baseman Coryn Schmit, who graduated May 9 with a 4.0 GPA in kinesiology, is one of only four infielders from 279 Division I softball programs across the nation named a Capital One Academic All-American.

“We are so proud of Coryn for all she has done both on and off the field for this program,” head softball coach Michelle Venturella said.

“This is a tremendous honor and she is extremely deserving of it.”

Schmit, UIC’s ninth Academic All-American, won third team honors last year.

Schmit, an alumna of the Honors College and the College of Applied Health Sciences, begins graduate studies in physical therapy at UIC this fall. She is a member of the National Society of Collegiate Honors and Golden Key International Honors Society.

Named to the Academic All-District Five first team in 2012 and 2013, she is three-time UIC Female Student-Athlete of the Year.

Schmit was named to the Horizon League all-Newcomer team as a freshman in 2010, then selected for the first team all-Horizon League and all-tournament team as a sophomore.

As a senior, she was a Horizon League pre-season team honoree and a second team all-Horizon League selection.
