UIC Experts

Same-sex Marriage: The U.S. Supreme Court announced it will hear challenges to laws prohibiting same-sex marriage. Social movement historian John D’Emilio, UIC professor of gender and women’s studies and history, is available to address issues related to the campaign for marriage equality and the evolution of societal attitudes toward same-sex marriage. Contact Brian Flood, (312) 996-7681.

10 Better Than 5: Taking the breast cancer drug tamoxifen for 10 years instead of the usual five further reduces the long-term chances of the disease reoccurring and diminishes the risk of dying, according to a new study. Debra Tonetti, UIC associate professor of pharmacology, can comment. Contact Sam Hostettler, (312) 355-2522.

Nursing Numbers: Enrollment in all types of professional nursing programs — baccalaureate level through graduate degrees — increased from 2011 to 2012, creating a more highly qualified nursing workforce, according to a new survey by the American Association of Colleges of Nursing. Patricia Lewis, UIC associate dean for clinical nursing practice studies, can comment. Contact Sam Hostettler, (312) 355-2522.

Mixing Meds: In response to a meningitis outbreak from drugs manufactured at a Massachusetts compounding pharmacy that killed 36 people and caused the illnesses of more than 500 others, Congress initiated a bill last week to require compounding pharmacies register with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
