UIC Experts

Presidential Prediction: A statistical model based on short-term unemployment trends correctly predicts the electoral-vote tally in 17 of the 21 presidential elections since 1928. UIC political scientist Robert Bruhl, who developed the model in 2007, can explain its accuracy — and the prediction for Tuesday night. Contact Bill Burton, (312) 965-0377; burton@uic.edu

Schools’ Report Cards. Experts note the discrepancy between results of the Illinois Standards Achievement Test, passed by 82 percent of third- through eighth-graders, and the Prairie State Achievement Exam, passed by only 51 percent of 10th-graders.  Paul Zavitkovsky, assessment specialist in the UIC Urban Education Leadership doctoral program, has an analysis. Elected School Board?  An elected school board would not guarantee a better school system, but it would represent the community and be directly accountable to it, says Pauline Lipman, UIC professor of educational policy studies. Contact Anne Brooks Ranallo, (312) 355-2523; aranallo@uic.edu
