UIC faculty among most cited researchers
Two faculty members at the University of Illinois Chicago have been named to the 2020 Clarivate Analytics Highly Cited Researchers list.
The list recognizes leading researchers in the sciences and social sciences from around the world. It is based on an analysis of journal article publication and citation data, an objective measure of a researcher’s influence, from 2009-2019.
The highly cited two UIC researchers this year are Ross Arena, professor and head of the department of physical therapy and interim head of the department of biomedical and health information sciences, and Dr. John M. Davis, professor of psychiatry.
Arena’s research interests include exercise testing and training in patients diagnosed with cardiopulmonary disease/dysfunction and healthy living initiatives and policies that promote health across the lifespan. As lead author on an American Heart Association policy statement, Arena’s research advocates change in the prevention and treatment of non-communicable diseases, urging stakeholders to collaborate in non-hierarchical ways to reduce lifestyle-based diseases. His recently published research topics include exercise after bariatric surgery, cardiopulmonary exercise testing, and cardiovascular involvement in COVID-19.
Dr. Davis is a pioneer in the development of meta-analysis and the comprehensive reviews of empirical studies, helpful in applying science to patients’ care. His research contributions have focused on the application of basic science to clinical psychiatry. This includes the implication of mechanism of action of antidepressants suggesting that abnormalities in brain chemicals may be involved in depression, including early studies of chemical levels in the postmortem brains of depressed patients. He was the first to study the clinical pharmacology of antipsychotics drugs. He also has researched mothers’ prenatal nutrition and its role in a child’s intelligence which resulted in food policy changes to The Dietary Guideline for America.
