UI Health patient celebrates milestone
“Pomp and Circumstance” played in the background as more than 40 friends, family and staff surrounded 14-year-old Isaiah Wright June 3 as he walked into a UI Health conference room to receive his eighth grade diploma from Cleveland School principal Debora Ward.

Outstanding innovation
Winners of the 2015 Innovator and Inventor of the Year Award will be recognized during a ceremony June 21.
The celebration takes place at 5 p.m. in the East Terrace, Student Center West.
The awards recognize an outstanding faculty member who has engaged with the Office of Technology Management in the technology transfer process. Winners are recognized for their innovative spirit and inventions’ potential impact and value to their respective field and to society. Honorees will receive $3,500 each.
Student scholarships
Doctoral and master’s degree candidates pursuing careers in public transportation can apply for the 2016 George Krambles Transportation Scholarship.
In its 10th year under management by the Urban Transportation Center, the competition is open to students from the colleges of Urban Planning and Public Affairs, Engineering and Business Administration and the School of Public Health. Cash prizes are awarded for publishable papers.

Sustainability, energy institute
The sixth annual UIC Summer Institute on Sustainability and Energy is accepting applications for the highly competitive two-week workshop and lecture series.
Senior-level undergraduates, graduate students and professionals working in the fields of sustainability and energy in any discipline can apply through July 1.
The institute, which runs from August 4 to 16, includes daily presentations on energy and sustainability-related topics, collaborative projects, mentoring activities, site visits and networking opportunities. Guest speakers in past years have included experts in a variety of disciplines, from architecture to public health.
The theme of this year’s program, “Nexus,” focuses on the connection
between water and energy.
Summer camps
Registration is open for high school students who want to participate in music and theatre summer camps on campus.
The Symphonic Band Camp takes place July 10 to 16 and Theatre Camp follows, July 11 to 22.
Outstanding employees
Nominations are due at noon on June 24 for two employee awards.
The Janice Watkins Award for Distinguished Civil Service recognizes exemplary civil service employees.
Academic professional employees can be nominated for the Chancellor’s Academic Professional Excellence (CAPE) Award, which recognizes contributions to the community.
Mentoring program
Apply to participate in the 2016–2017 Staff Leadership Mentor Program through June 24.
The program matches mentors and mentees and provides guidance and support over the course of a year.
Academic professional and civil service employees are welcome to participate. Employees who have been in their careers for at least two years can apply to become mentors.
Expectant mothers
UIC Parking Services has developed a new program that provides convenient parking for expectant mothers.
UIC students and employees who are in the third trimester of pregnancy and already have a parking permit from Parking Services can request a transfer to a closer, more convenient lot.
