POP-UP PANTRY THURSDAY

The UIC Pop-Up Food Pantry, which distributed more than 1,100 bags to UIC students last school year, will be open Thursday, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., in 603A Student Center East.

The pantry offers free groceries to any current UIC student with valid i-card.

The pantry was established last year by Undergraduate Student Government, the Wellness Center and the Office of the Dean of Students to alleviate food insecurity among UIC students.

Items, donated by faculty, staff and students, include canned goods, nonperishable food and non-food items like deodorant and toilet paper. Donations are accepted at the Wellness Center, 238 Student Center East, or call 312-413-2120 for pick-up. Donation drives will be held Oct. 8 and Nov. 12.

Donated items must be nonperishable items in cans, cartons or bags, unopened in the original container with original product label, undamaged and within the expiration date.

Most popular items include instant meals, pasta and rice, hot and cold cereal, snack foods including granola bars and trail mix, coffee and tea and baby food. Important basics include peanut butter and jelly and canned fish, meats, beans, soups and vegetables. Non-food items needed include shampoo and conditioner, toothbrushes and toothpaste, toilet paper, deodorant, laundry detergent and diapers. Candy and cookies are not accepted.

Students interested in volunteering should contact Wellness Center director Carol Peterson, carolp@uic.edu
