Help This Garden Grow: Hazel Johnson Collage Workshop and Podcast Party

Date / Time

April 18, 2024

1:00 pm - 3:00 pm

The Latino Cultural Center and the Black Cultural Center will host an open studio and presentation of the “Help This Garden Grow” podcast at the Latino Cultural Center.

You can drop in for the open studio to make environmental justice-themed collages and hear the first two episodes of the docuseries podcast. Materials will be provided.

“Help This Garden Grow” tells the story of Hazel Johnson, a resident of the far southeast side Chicago neighborhood of Altgeld Gardens and founder of People for Community Recovery. Known as one of the “mothers of environmental justice,” Johnson will be honored with art-making at this Earth Month event. We will create collages for environmental justice as we listen to the podcast and learn from a multi-generational conversation between organizers, policymakers and land stewards. We will be joined by community organizers from People for Community Recovery and the Southeast Environmental Task Force.

For access needs or questions, email lcc@uic.edu or call 312-996-3095. The Latino Cultural Center is accessible by wheelchair. All are welcome.

This program is funded by the UIC Sustainability Fee and the UIC Honors College.
